Photos part of description
C&O the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad had a true story about workers finding a stray domestic tabby kitten. They called her Chessie, which became a household name in advertising for passenger trains back around the thirties. Ruth Carroll wrote this fiction book based on a most famous mascot - one that entertained Chessie's many children fans and their parents, as they travelled together on vacations and passenger excursion in comfort on these popular trains. The Motto was Sleep Like A Kitten to advertise air-controlled temperature settings in sleeping cars ~Please Note Preowned Book did not originally belong to Seller (it is 80+ years old) complete; has all pages ~ described to best of ability. If you know something different, would you please let me know? It could use some repair/cleaning, and if you know this was the FAMOUS Anne Carson, let me know?
More picky details:
Message any questions! Pages are white and flexible in great reading condition (not brittle).
There is a name written in places;
Anne Carson
in script/cursive at the top of inside cover, then printed at top of page across from it. It's also written at top seen inside when back cover is opened, too. This detail adds some mystery and more character to the history of this First Edition Collectible. Seller does not know who was the original owner, or at what age Anne Carson obtained this children's book? NO writing or marks on most pages, but did find TWO sentences where word pussy was crossed out to be replaced with other words when the story was read; first, the word
cat
and second time was
Chessie
written above it to be read
THAT
way instead. It seemed interesting that someone made these teacher or proofreading type, moral corrections; perhaps because that was what made me realize who Anne Carson may be (interesting, huh)? She may have been at the beginning of her career at that time? It's only an educated guess.. do not know if she had children of her own or not? Seller googled to research her, and found that interesting.
The Seller ALSO learned that the original art image (appears as part of cover-art plus the two added kittens) had been derived from an etching by Viennese artist, Guido Gruenwald. The Chessie image first appeared in the September, 1933 Fortune Magazine advertisement with the C&O's slogan, "Sleep Like a Kitten and Wake Up Fresh as a Daisy in Air-Conditioned Comfort." That ad caught on, and then many Chessie products came on the market, including this book.
One page has a small check mark on it. The following blemish
finds
were in line with someone intelligent; like the poet, Anne Carson. This book is intact with no pages missing, but edges of cover show wear on all sides, plus the binding needs tape, or this book could use restoration, including some cleaning (especially front cover), which is up to the new Buyer (perhaps consult an expert). Two pages had very small tear-outs, that which did not take away from any of the reading (minor, but shown and mentioned for honesty). No dust jacket (do not know if there ever was any on this)? Highly-rare find in ANY condition. The back cover is first photo shown above, as you see?
