Dr. Seuss
Nuzzlepuss Seal Ashtray
5.5" dia. hollow white metal w/text in lower relief around rim has 3.75" tall figure in center wearing admiral hat w/low relief anchor on his chest. Unmarked but likely issued by Esso. c. 1940. Dr. Seuss launched the "Seuss Navy" in 1936 when he designed the Essomarine booth for Standard Oil at the National Motorboat Show in Grand Central Palace. Visitors were signed on as admirals, handed diplomas and photographed w/cardboard Dr. Seuss characters. Eventually the entire fleet of Standard Oil tankers were commissioned into the Seuss Navy. Ashtray has trace of lt. wear and has nice patina. Underside has molding hole as made. VF. A rare artifact from Dr. Seuss's early advertising days.  It is believed that approximately 1000 of these were made for the "Admirals" of the Seuss Navy for the 1940 banquet.  Very hard to find.  Last one sold at Christies for 717.
Part of the outside of the ashtray is missing, but the rest is solid and in wonderful condition.  A great collectors piece at a great price!
